During the match against Westrozebeke at their home ground in Sint-Eloois-Winkel in the Belgian province of West Flanders, Winkel Sport B was leading 2-1 when the opposition was awarded a penalty in the second half.

Espeel saved the penalty and celebrated excitedly before collapsing immediately after, according to reports in Belgian media, including the newspaper Het Nieuwsblad.

Emergency services were called to the pitch and attempted to assist Espeel using a defibrillator, but he was pronounced dead shortly after the incident. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday evening to determine the cause of Espeel’s death, but the results have not been released yet, according to Reuters.

Espeel’s death has been a shock to the football community, and tributes have poured in on social media to honor his memory.

Winkel Sport B’s Statement

According to Belgian media reports, Espeel’s younger brother Aaron was sitting on the bench during the game as well.

A statement released by Winkel Sport paid tribute to Espeel’s memory.

On Monday evening, more than 1,000 people attended a memorial service for the goalkeeper Espeel, in which he was remembered.
