There are also stricter rules regarding the consumption of alcohol in UAE than they are in the UK, with the law dictating that “it is a punishable offence under UAE law to drink or be under the influence of alcohol in public” and general advice being to only drink in private spaces, such as the home.

A Foreign Office spokesman told Cosmopolitan UK: “We are providing consular assistance to a British national who was arrested in the United Arab Emirates and are in contact with the local authorities.”
