Angie Craig. The 26-year-old suspect, who has no fixed address, was charged with simple assault following the attack that took place in the elevator of the congresswoman’s apartment building in Washington, DC on Thursday morning.

The police released a statement confirming the arrest and the charges against Hamlin.

Hamlin does not appear to have legal representation, according to reports.

A police report states that an incident occurred at 7:10 a.m., and “the suspect fled the scene when the victim defended themselves.”

A police report stated that Rep. Angie Craig was punched “with a closed fist” and had her neck grabbed by an assailant who followed her into an elevator.

Craig defended herself by tossing her hot coffee at the attacker, according to the report. The Minnesota congresswoman’s chief of staff, Nick Coe, confirmed that she suffered bruising but is physically okay after defending herself.

In addition, he stated that there was “no evidence” that the attack was politically motivated and that the assailant fled the scene.

In her statement, Coe said the congresswoman called 911 and is grateful for the quick response of the DC Metropolitan Police Department.

Additionally, it stated that the congresswoman “requests privacy at this time.”

According to Craig’s office, Vice President Kamala Harris spoke with him earlier this afternoon.

A source reported that Vice President Harris called Rep. Craig to inquire about her well-being and offer support. During the call, Harris advised Craig to prioritize her self-care and take the necessary steps to heal from the traumatic experience.

“We are all very grateful that she is safe and recovering, but appalled that this terrifying assault occurred,” Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries said in a statement.

The US Capitol Police and House sergeant at arms have been asked to ensure Angie and her family’s safety while in Washington, DC and at home.

Recently, there has been a lot of worry about the security of politicians and their loved ones due to the violent attack that took place at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, and other similar incidents, such as the assault on the spouse of former Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Craig is a member of the House of Representatives who was elected in 2018 and won against Republican Representative Jason Lewis. In the 118th Congress, Craig holds a leadership role as a co-chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus.
