Super Bowl-winning coach Sean Payton trade grades: Broncos pay up; Saints land two valuable picks. According to the contract, the Broncos gave up two top draft picks to acquire Wilson’s coach.

A deal has been reached between the Denver Broncos and the New Orleans Saints to make Sean Payton Denver’s next head coach, Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson reported.

On Tuesday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport first reported that the teams had reached an agreement.

A source told Robinson that the Broncos would give the Saints a first-round pick in 2023 and a second-round pick in 2024 for the right to hire Payton. The Broncos would also receive a third-round pick in 2024.

In a brief interview with Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Payton expressed excitement about taking over in Denver.

“Great fanbase. Great tradition,” Payton said. “The ownership group is fantastic, and I love the way they competed last year. It’s a great football city like we had in New Orleans.”

At the beginning, the terms of the deal between Payton and the Broncos were unclear.

In 2017, Payton stepped down as coach of the Saints. Everyone knew he wouldn’t stay out of coaching for long.

It doesn’t feel like retirement today, said Payton when he announced his resignation, according to WWL in New Orleans.

A coach with Payton’s credentials is rarely available during a coaching cycle. Jim Harbaugh was also a big name in this coaching cycle.

In his nine years as the Saints’ coach, Payton won nine playoff games, including one Super Bowl. Before Payton came to New Orleans, the Saints didn’t have a single playoff win in franchise history.

Almost immediately after Payton joined the Saints, the team landed Drew Brees in free agency. It’s difficult to say which quarterback was more responsible for the Saints’ success in that era, but Payton’s record is pretty impressive.

He played for the Saints from 152-89. With him, the team never finished worse than 7-9 and won nine times more than ten games. Before Payton, New Orleans had never achieved such a level of success.

As their first and only championship in franchise history, the Saints defeated the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV in 2009.

When teams hire a new coach, it’s rare to find a candidate who is more than 60 games over .500 and has won a Super Bowl. Despite spending just one season away from football, Payton worked with Fox Sports, so it’s not like he was away from football for a long time and it passed him by.

He has reportedly been putting together his next assistant staff. With the offseason starting, multiple teams were interested in hiring him after he took a short hiatus from coaching, with the Saints holding his rights and able to get trade compensation if he was hired elsewhere.

In spite of his advancing age, Payton wasn’t ready to retire.
