Police in Lakeland, Florida, say 10 people were wounded in a drive-by shooting on Monday afternoon. Two of those wounded are in critical condition.

According to Lakeland Police Department Chief Sam Taylor, a dark-blue Nissan four-door sedan arrived at the scene of the shooting.

“The vehicle slowed, did not stop, and all four windows went down. It appeared to be occupied by four shooters in the vehicle,” Taylor said. “They started firing from all four windows of the vehicle and shooting males on both sides.”

Among the eight victims, Taylor said, none has life-threatening wounds. Three victims were transported by emergency services, and they were between 20 and 35 years old. The other victims were transported in their own vehicles.

It is believed by the police that it was a targetted event, according to the police chief.

The Nissan, which had temporary tags, took off quickly, and police are “actively looking for that vehicle right now,” Taylor said.

Taylor further said. “We will be out most of the night trying to figure out who these individuals are in the vehicle,”

There may be at least four males who were wearing facial coverings, according to Taylor. He encouraged the community to contact police with any information they may be able to provide.

On Monday, the police department offered a $5,000 reward for anyone who could identify and arrest suspects related to the shooting in a joint effort with Heartland Crime Stoppers Florida. 1-900-226 TIPS (8477) is the number to call to report information.

A “quantity” of marijuana was found at the crime scene, which indicates that narcotics sales or marijuana sales were taking place at the time,” Taylor said. “Whether that is significant is unknown.”

It was the first time the chief had worked on a case where so many people had been shot at once in 34 years with the department.

“This is something that doesn’t happen in Lakeland,” Taylor said.

In addition to dark-tinted windows and a temporary tag on the vehicle, officers said it was seen speeding away after the shooting.

The police do not believe the shooting was random, but they are not sure if all the victims were targeted or if some were accidentally hit.

Approximately 25 officers and 15 detectives responded to the shooting, according to Chief Taylor.

FOX 13 obtained home security footage from a neighbor who said her children had just got off the school bus when bullets started flying. In the 30-second clip, shots could be heard.

“Get in the house,” she said in the video. “I’ll call for help.”

According to police, a large amount of marijuana was found at the scene, indicating that a drug sale may have taken place.

“It just reminds you how short life is,” Smith said. “Any moment can be taken from you whether you have anything to do with it or not.”
